Sketching at Pasar Baru Jakarta

Every time I was passing by this market, I always amazed with its main gate written \\\”Passer Baroe, 1820\\\”. Surely this market is one of the oldest markets in Jakarta.

Pasar Baru is located in Sawah Besar Subdistrict, Central Jakarta. You can easily reach there using Commuter Line or Transjakarta and of course using Online Taxi. Its location is strategic like I said before, there a few alternatives to going there. Across from the main gate, there\\\’s a Jakarta Art Building and other building former Dutch Colonial. If you\\\’re into Urban Sketching, this place gonna make you comfy with your pen and papers.

Back in 1820, the name Pasar Baru (\\\”New Market\\\”) was given to distinguished it from the previous market that established in 1732 which is Pasar Senen and Pasar Tanah Abang. In Pasar Baru, you can find so many markets sells fashion clothing, glasses, jewelry, electronics, and the other daily needs.

The sketching process itself was a bit tricky. After I stopped at Juanda Station, I walked for about 600 m until I got to the Main Gate. Before I decided to search for a spot, I continued walking to the other side of the market and enjoying the atmosphere there.

After I had enough, I walked back to the main gate. It was hot and humid but I didn\\\’t find the right place to sit or at least under the shadow or not too crowded. Gave up, I decided to sketch the Jakarta Art Building across the street because there\\\’s a lot of benches over there.

When I hit the pedestrian bridge, I gazed to the Main Gate with the river laid in front of it. And so on, I open my sketchbook and start sketching from there. Many people passed over but I\\\’m not distracted after I\\\’m in the zone and left to another dimension with my hand holding the brush on the paper.
